On Monday, we watched a neat DVD from Colgate about Dental Health. Then, we did an egg experiment. We took five eggs and put them in five, different cups of soda. We made a guess (hypothesis) about what would happen to the eggs, if we left them in the cups for one, whole day. We had many good guesses including:
The eggs becoming rotten
The eggs developing a hole
The eggs turning black, green, or purple
The eggs cracking
Someone even thought that the eggs might blow up
We wrote down our guesses and then waited until Tuesday. When we took them out of the soda on Tuesday, the eggs were brown! We talked about why they turned brown. I also explained that these eggs were like their teeth. I told them their teeth would turn brown, if they drank too much soda. Also, the experiment showed them how important it is to brush their teeth twice a day. Next, we took toothbrushes and toothpaste and tried to brush the eggs white. It was very difficult. Again, it reinforced brushing their teeth daily instead of letting food and drink sit on their teeth for long periods. Each student even received a toothbrush from my dentist to help with their daily brushing. We had a lot of fun with this experiment. We even wrote about the results. They are becoming such good writers, and I really enjoy reading their writing.
Here are some of their guesses and results:
I think that it will be rotten, when I get up and it will be brown.
Brushing the eggs with toothbrushes and toothpaste
She did a good job brushing. It's looking much whiter.
This is fun but very hard to do! Some friends even thought it was a little bit gross. :-)
