Egg Experiment

On Monday, we watched a neat DVD from Colgate about Dental Health. Then, we did an egg experiment. We took five eggs and put them in five, different cups of soda. We made a guess (hypothesis) about what would happen to the eggs, if we left them in the cups for one, whole day. We had many good guesses including:
The eggs becoming rotten
The eggs developing a hole
The eggs turning black, green, or purple
The eggs cracking
Someone even thought that the eggs might blow up
We wrote down our guesses and then waited until Tuesday. When we took them out of the soda on Tuesday, the eggs were brown! We talked about why they turned brown. I also explained that these eggs were like their teeth. I told them their teeth would turn brown, if they drank too much soda. Also, the experiment showed them how important it is to brush their teeth twice a day. Next, we took toothbrushes and toothpaste and tried to brush the eggs white. It was very difficult. Again, it reinforced brushing their teeth daily instead of letting food and drink sit on their teeth for long periods. Each student even received a toothbrush from my dentist to help with their daily brushing. We had a lot of fun with this experiment. We even wrote about the results. They are becoming such good writers, and I really enjoy reading their writing.
Here are some of their guesses and results:

This is fun but very hard to do! Some friends even thought it was a little bit gross. :-)

Muffins for Moms!

This morning, our school had Muffins for Moms. I went and tried to get as many pictures as I could of students with their moms or other special people. I'm sorry, if I missed anyone. It looked like everyone was having a great time. We also celebrated a birthday today. B brought in delicious treats.

Learning About Different Countries Plus So Much More

For our inquiry project, we learned about our country's flag. We even made an American flag. We also talked about "The Statue of Liberty." I explained that she greets all of the new people to our country. They saw a picture of her, and we talked about how she's made out of copper just like our state's capitol. After we talked about our country, I divided the class into four groups. Each group was given a country: China, Australia, Canada, or Mexico. Each group learned about and made their country's flag. Also, they each learned about a symbol from their country: the panda bear, kangaroo, moose, and pinata. Then, the groups shared the information with the entire class, so we could all learn about these four interesting countries. They did great and they learned a lot.
Holding up their finished American flags (I didn't get every student's picture but I got most of them):

In math, we worked on measuring with unifix cubes. Each student was given 6 different sized snowmen. They had to measure the snowmen with unifix cubes and record the number of unifix cubes they used to measure the snowman. It was a lot of fun!
Here's the blank copies of the snowman measuring activities - I got it from Mrs. Ricca's Kindergarten blog:

We color coded the snowmen to help with recording the answers. It worked great!
